Essential Oxygen's BR Peppermint Toothpaste is a food-grade hydrogen peroxide–based organic toothpaste with 17 recognizable ingredients — all certified organic plants, essential oils, or food-grade minerals. It holds USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, and Certified B Corporation status simultaneously, and tested non-detect for lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic in independent third-party lab testing (Lead Safe Mama, April 2025).

In a category where 44 of 51 popular toothpastes tested by Lead Safe Mama in 2025 showed detectable lead, Essential Oxygen is in the tiny minority that came back non-detect across all four heavy metals. That single data point would be enough — but this product also happens to be the only toothpaste we're aware of that stacks three HIGH-rigor certifications at once: USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, and Certified B Corp with an above-average impact score of 83.9.
The formulation is quietly brilliant. Most natural toothpastes reach for calcium carbonate or hydrated silica as their abrasive base — the same minerals that repeatedly test high for lead in 'clean' brands. Essential Oxygen uses calcium phosphate instead, which is both cleaner and biomimetic (calcium phosphate is the precursor to hydroxyapatite, the mineral your tooth enamel is literally made of). The RDA of ~12 is extremely gentle — a real win for enamel stewardship.
Kate Linforth founded Essential Oxygen at an Austin farmers market in 2005 with food-grade hydrogen peroxide and a few essential oils. Twenty years later the company is still independent, still woman-owned, still made in the USA, with zero FDA warning letters or recalls on record. No parent conglomerate, no greenwashing, no ingredient the team can't name off the top of their heads.
One fair debate worth flagging: some biological dentists prefer to avoid daily hydrogen peroxide because of its broad antimicrobial effect on the oral microbiome. It's not a safety issue — food-grade H₂O₂ at these concentrations is well-studied — but it's a practitioner-level conversation worth having.
No Seed Oils
Only organic coconut oil — a clean fat explicitly permitted by our standard.
No Artificial Dyes
No colorants of any kind.
No Pesticides
USDA Certified Organic restricts synthetic pesticides and glyphosate at the field level.
No High-Fructose Corn Syrup
Sweetened with whole-leaf organic stevia powder only.
No Artificial Sweeteners
Whole-leaf stevia is a plant, not an isolated extract or sugar alcohol like xylitol or erythritol.
No Artificial Preservatives
Preservation comes from hydrogen peroxide plus antimicrobial essential oils (clove, cinnamon, rosemary). No BHA/BHT, sodium benzoate, or potassium sorbate.
No GMOs
Non-GMO Project Verified — independently tested.
No Parabens or Sulfates
No parabens, SLS, SLES, or sodium coco sulfate.
No PFAS
Tube is BPA-free plastic; PFAS are not explicitly lab-tested, but B Corp and USDA Organic screening make contamination unlikely.
Avoid Microplastics Whenever Possible
Packaged in a BPA-free plastic tube — the tube itself is plastic, though the formula contains no microbeads or plastic abrasives. A sugarcane or metal tube would close this gap.
No Carrageenan
Thickened with organic xanthan and guar gums.
Minimal Processing
Aloe juice, essential oils, food-grade H₂O₂, plant gums, and a natural mineral. NOVA 1–2 equivalent.
Toxin & Heavy-Metal Free
Independently tested non-detect for lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic (Lead Safe Mama, April 2025).

Care & Use
Store at room temperature with the cap sealed — food-grade hydrogen peroxide slowly loses potency once opened, so a 4 oz tube is sized for 4–6 weeks of daily use by one person. The low RDA (~12) makes it gentle enough for sensitive teeth and exposed root surfaces. One pediatric note: wintergreen oil contains methyl salicylate and shouldn't be used in large amounts by children under 6 — fine for adult and older-kid use, but worth flagging for young families.
